It is commonly used to expand the alveolar socket, sever periodontal ligament fibers, and facilitate controlled tooth removal prior to forceps application.

The Coupland design features a flat, broad blade with a straight shank, allowing effective transmission of controlled force along the long axis of the root. This instrument is suitable for both routine and surgical extractions, particularly in cases requiring gradual socket expansion and atraumatic elevation.

Direction to use

Confirm extraction plan and ensure adequate anesthesia.

Reflect soft tissue minimally if required for access.

Insert the elevator blade between the root surface and alveolar bone.

Position the blade along the long axis of the tooth or root.

Apply controlled rotational or levering force to sever periodontal ligament fibers.

Gradually expand the socket using steady pressure.

Repeat at different points around the root if necessary.

Proceed with forceps extraction once adequate mobility is achieved.

After use, clean, disinfect, and sterilize according to standard autoclave protocols.
